When teaching the following are some Icebreakers that are effective:

Questions & sharing about oneself too.
1. Asking about what they look forward to the most for the week/year.
2. Asking about their favorite meal, sport or cultural activities.

Games
1. Playing games such as two truth one lie.
2. Any game that helps the student to get to know each other and their lecturer.

Presentation
1. It helps all to feal relax by the time the last person would have presented. The Lecturer as well as the students would have seen a different side of the students.

Hello Dawn,
Thank you for sharing with us these great ways of building a community within the course. Indeed learning takes place when participants are relaxed and feel comfortable to work with each other. Community building is meant to enhance collaborative learning by peers and the tutor . Your two questions are good for creating social presence, cognitive presence and teaching presence. The three which are key to building a community of inquiry.
Thank you!
Beatrice
