While much is to be said of the academic and social aspects of the support that these students may need, I also place great emphasis on the emotional support that is required. Here in Guyana, the public school system - up until the COVID-19 pandemic - is entirely built on the in-person, face-to-face setting and what that does for the learners.
Moving to an online setting will create many emotional needs that will be difficult to fill even while on the virtual space. And so it requires dedicated, skilled and competent personnel to provide this kind of support; but also persons who can be compassionate yet firm, empathetic yet direct and so on. Left unchecked, these emotional needs can be the reasons many learners spiral out of control and cannot matriculate.
